An interesting Confederate veteran’s pinback badge with a U.S. shield and eagle at top over a ribbon reading: “WE ANSWERED THE CALL IN ‘ 61 / AND WE’LL GO AGAIN IF NEEDED.” This is over a vignette of the US Capitol, bordered by ribbon scroll reading, “WASHINGTON D.C. 1917” with “UCV” in large letters in a circle below and “27th ANNUAL REUNION” at bottom center. The badge is stamped brass, with no bends or breaks and the spring fastening pin in place on the top reverse. The reverse is a dark green and the face shows shading in a mix of thin, dark  green and brown with remnants of a gilt or bronze finish, mixed with some brown and faint green.

This reunion was held June 4-7, 1917. The location was somewhat ironic, given Confederate goals during the war, and the boast “we answered the call in ’61” is ambiguous at best, but holding the event in Washington was a special gesture toward sectional reconciliation. Various parties had been trying for demonstrations of reconciliation by veterans for some time, proposing joint reunions, etc., with mixed success. In 1917 the issue gained renewed importance, of course- the U.S. had declared war on Germany in April. Among other things, much of the concern may have been generated by disclosure of the Zimmerman Telegram of 1917, revealing Germany’s support for Mexican seizure of southern US territory.    [sr][ph:m/L]
