This sash is a regulation crimson officer’s sash made of silk net complete with Turk's-head knots and tassels. The sash is in good condition with minor wear to the fringe. There are a few snags to the fabric throughout. This sash measures approximately 3 5/8 inches wide and 106 inches long including the knots and tassels at each end.
Overall, this sash is in very good condition for its age. There are some pulled threads throughout. The crimson coloring faded on the knots and tassels, which show a moderate amount of wear. However, the color of the sash remains strong.
Regulations called for army, cavalry, artillery, and ordnance officers to wear a sash of crimson silk net, which was to be wrapped twice around the waist over the frock coat and tied behind the left hip with no more than eighteen inches of extension below the knot. These sashes were required for all types of duty with the exception of fatigue duty and stable duty. The real purpose of these sashes was to signify authority during both field operations and during camp duty. [cla][ph:L]
