This is a nicely labeled section of rail stamped in small letters: “Section of U. rail used on the Manassas Gap branch Orange & Alexandria R.R. during the war 1861-65” and signed on the top “From James Ward, Jr.” A rather unprepossessing relic, this was part of a strategically important communication and supply line that was repeatedly fought over during the war. The Manassas Gap R.R. was actually a separate entity from the O&A R.R. during the war, though it had some of the same investors, but had a contract to use that company’s lines from Alexandria to Manassas. It successfully completed lines to the upper Shenandoah, reaching Strasburg and Front Royal in 1854, but failed to complete its own lines from Manassas to Alexandria and in 1867 merged with the O&A RR. During the war one of its most well known services to the Confederacy was to transport Johnston’s troops to join Beauregard at First Bull Run. It’s uncompleted lines formed earthworks defended by Jackson at Second Bull Run. A simple, but rather meaningful relic.  [sr][ph:L]
