This is an excavated brass counterguard and knucklebow from a regulation US 1850 pattern foot officer’s sword, the standard sword carried in the Civil War by infantry lieutenants and captains, as well as company level officers in foot, or “heavy,” artillery regiments, etc. This follows the regulation pattern with openwork, scrolling floral motifs between integrally cast branches in the guard. These were cast and then chased to enhance the detail, and given a gilt finish. This has a generally dark, aged brass patina, with a patch of verdigris on either side, but there are a few traces of the gilt and the detailing remains fine.  The small scroll at the end of the knucklebow that would join with the pommel cap is there, though the knucklebow is bent out of alignment with the guard.
