Bust view of a clean shaven middle aged subject wearing a light-colored coat with dark collar. On each side of the collar are three stars indicating the rank of colonel.

Contrast and clarity are excellent. Mount is made of heavier stock than usual. Paper has some light surface dirt.

Reverse has no photographer’s imprint but does have “J.C. WISE” in modern ink and “JENNINGS CROPPER WISE” in old pencil and at bottom, also in pencil is “ALEXANDRIA” along with some collector information.

The ID on the back is erroneous. Jennings Cropper Wise was not born until 1881 and though he wrote about the Confederate artillery he was obviously not a member of its armed forces. Research may uncover that the subject is a Wise family member.

Still, the image is a great view of a colonel’s rank which you don’t often see. [ad][ph:L]
