This is a seated studio view of a well-uniformed Confederate officer. He wears a double-breasted frock with no apparent rank visible. The image is clear with very good contrast. The mount remains in excellent condition. A period ink identification on the back, "Jack Adams". Photographer's backmark, T. Lilienthal, New Orleans.

Unfortunately this name is too vague to positively identify. Even if we assume he served in a Louisiana unit due to the photographer's backmark, we still have two candidates: 2nd Lieutenant J.W. Adams was in the 4th "European" Louisiana Infantry and 1st Lieutenant J.J. Adams was in the 4th Louisiana Infantry.
