John Boyd lived in Philadelphia, PA as a 23-year-old Clerk when he enlisted as a 1^st Sergeant on 4/24/1861.  That same day, he mustered into Company H of the 18^th Pennsylvania Infantry.  Being a 3-month regiment, he mustered out on 8/7/1861 and two weeks later enlisted in Company G of the 23^rd Pennsylvania.  He was promoted to 2^nd Lieutenant and transferred to Company D on 9/11/1862,  He served through all major battles in which the regiment took part, but was killed on 6/1/1864 in the assaults toward Old Cold Harbor.

The image is mounted to a common card with double-gold gilt border patterns.  The reverse shows penciled writing reading “Duffy Album / 84 / LT. JOHN BOYD / 23^rd PA INF.”  At center is a photographer back mark reading “PHOTOGRAPHED BY McADAMS, No. 101, King Street, Alexandria, Va. No. (blank)”.  Edges and corners on either side show virtually no damage or wear, and only a fractional section of the low reverse edge shows mild discoloration.
