This image features Captain John H. Lucas of Company F of the 1st New Jersey Cavalry. John enlisted on 8/2/1861 and mustered in on 8/23/1861.  He served with the regiment until he was killed on 10/12/1863 at Sulphur Springs, VA, when advancing Confederate cavalry tested the defenses of the nearby Rappahannock ford.  By the 13th, elements of the 1st New Jersey Cavalry and 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry (numbering approximately 70) were tangled with a superior force without any support.

The image is mounted to a common card with “Brady” and “New York” labels inside the double line gilt border pattern.  Very slight rolling is noted at the upper corners of the card, with the image remaining in excellent condition. The reverse is signed “Cap J H Lucas / of Co F 1 NJ CAV” and the center features a Brady backmark reading “BRADY’S NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT GALLERIES. / Broadway & Tenth Street, / New York. / & / No. 352 Pennsylvania Av. Washington, D.C.”

An interesting individual, killed in an obscure action, taken by Brady – an ideal piece for the Civil War image collector.  [cm][ph:L]
