Mosby Parsons was a Mexican War veteran and Missouri politician who received a Brigadier General appointment and commission in the Confederate Army, subsequently leading a division in Missouri, Louisiana, and Arkansas during the Civil War. He was eventually promoted to Major General, but the formalities of the process were not fully completed and Jefferson Davis never confirmed his new appointment. Famously, he was among a group of former Confederate officers who elected to go to Mexico after the Civil War to avoid possible punishment for their allegiances.  The group was robbed and murdered by a Mexican Army officer in August of 1865 and the Mexican Government paid large sums of money to their families, as their murders still technically violated a peace agreement with Mexico made during their concurrent war with France.

The image features a bust-view portrait of Parsons and is mounted to a common card with gilt border patterning.  “Parsons” is inscribed in pencil across the lower edge of the photo. The reverse is clean with “Parsons 2 /” penciled at the top edge, a cancelled stamp dated “AUG 26 1865”, and the lower portion of an E. & H. T. ANTHONY commercial photography back mark.  All edges of both the image and card are complete, crisp, and sharp.  [cm] [ph:L]
