John “Cerro Gordo” Williams was a Kentucky politician and former US Army officer turned Confederate Brigadier General.  Initially fighting in the Eastern Theater of the Civil War, he rose to the ranking commander of Confederate Kentucky Infantry and Cavalry, eventually receiving the thanks of the Confederate Congress for his resourceful efforts to halt Burnside’s expedition into Eastern Tennessee.

The image features an engraved portrait of Williams and is mounted to a common card with a double gilt border pattern.  A penciled “J. S. Williams” is written across the lower edge of the photo.  The reverse is clean with a second “J S Williams”, a pen-cancelled stamp, and a partially obscured E. & H. T. Anthony photographer back mark with a penciled marking underneath. All edges and corners are sharp and condition remains very good.

A scarce carte-de-visite for the comprehensive collection.  [cm] [ph:L]
