William Mackall made a career of the US Army for 24 years until resigning his commission to join the Confederate Army.  He rose to the rank of Brigadier General, commanding the combined garrison at Island Number 10, and held senior positions under Johnston, Bragg, and Beuregard.  He left Bragg’s staff after Chickamauga and commanded district troops near Macon, Georgia.  It was there that he was captured by US troops on April 20, 1865 to be paroled sometime thereafter.

The image features a bust view of Mackall and is mounted to a common card in good condition with only very minor corner wear.  A penciled label reads “Mackall” across the bottom edge of the image. The reverse is clean with a secondary “Gen Mackall / New” written in pencil near the top.  No photographer back mark is observed and a cancelled stamp is dated “AUG 26 1865”.

A more obscure photograph for the Civil War image collector.  Mackall is an important but not often encountered subject.    [cm] [ph:L]
