Robert Hoke was the youngest man to achieve the Confederate rank of Major General at age 26. Wounded at 2nd Fredericksburg and recuperating for much of 1863, his temporary replacement, Colonel Avery, was killed in his place at Gettysburg.  Robert was well enough to distinguish himself and his command in Virginia in 1864 and made some of the final tactical stands of the Carolinas Campaign against Sherman.

The image features a bust view of Hoke, with only minor wear to the bottom corners and slight spot of rolling along the top edge.  A trivial crease is noted at the top left corner of the image itself but no material or integrity loss are noted.  Scattered foxing lends itself to the age of the image and does not detract from presentation.  The image is labeled in pencil: “Hoke”. The reverse is mostly clean, with a secondary “Hoke” written in pencil, and a cancelled stamp dated “AUG 26 1865” – which partially obscures an E. Anthony photographer back mark.

An important and uncommon carte-de-visite for the collector of fine Civil War images.    [cm] [ph:L]
