Scott is posed seated and wearing his presentation grade sword with a perched eagle on the pommel. He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat with brush epaulettes. The frock coat has embroidered oak leaf borders on the collar and cuffs. He also wears a wide dark sash under a sword belt sporting gold embroidered oak leaves and a two-piece “US” plate

Contrast and clarity are excellent. Paper and mount have light edge wear and surface dirt. Bottom of the mount has 1862 publishing information.

Reverse has a printed caption “THIS PICTURE OF LT. GEN. WINFIELD SCOTT WAS MADE AT WEST POINT, N.Y., JUNE 10. 1862. THE SUBSCRIBERS CLAIM THAT, FOR CORRECTNESS OF PORTRAITURE, FINISH AND DETAIL, IT IS PRE EMINENTLY THE BEST PORTRAIT OF THE GREAT AMERICAN MILITARY CHIEFTAIN. CHAS. D. FREDRICKS & CO., 587 BROADWAY, NEW YORK.”

Winfield Scott’s military career began in 1808. As a Major General he a led a US Army in the capture of Mexico City during the Mexican War. When the Civil War came, he was old and unable to take field command of an Army. He devised the famous “Anaconda Plan” which was basically the strategy that won the war. He resigned in November of 1861.  [ad][ph:L]
