This is a carte de visite of Thomas Louis Mills in Confederate uniform. Standing studio view wearing long frock coat with sword belt and sword. Image is clear but light. Mount has been trimmed. Signed in ink at bottom, "Thomas Louis Mills." No photographer's backmark.

Mills was a medical student from New Orleans and joined Company A, 10th Louisiana Infantry. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant on February 1, 1862. Transferred to Company G with promotion to 1st Lieutenant in August 1862. He was present for the regiments numerous engagements up to Gettysburg when he was sick in a Richmond hospital. He was present again with the start of Grant's Overland Campaign. Mills was seriously wounded in the left shoulder at Spotsylvania in May 1864. He was absent recuperating for the remainder of the war.
