Waist-up view of Uptegrove in uniform with vest and four-button coat. Service strips on his sleeves. Clear image with good contrast. Light period pencil on reverse. No photographer’s backmark.

He was 21 years old when he enlisted on 8/30/1861 at Rushford, NY as a Private in Company E, 5th New York Cavalry. He re-enlisted on 2/22/1864 and was mustered out on 7/19/1865 at Winchester, VA. Records indicate that he was wounded twice.  [jet] [ph:L]
