A studio view of a dog (an English Springer Spaniel?) with a military great coat wrapped around and a kepi on its head. The dog is seated behind a covered table with a book on it. Image is clear with good contrast. Mount is in fine condition. Along the bottom edge of the mount in pencil, "A lieutenant, corps d' Afrique who passed Casey's board." Photographer's backmark, N.A. & R.A. Moore, "east of Allyn House" [Hartford].

The pencil caption likely refers to Silas Casey who wrote the three-volume "System of Infantry Tactics" and "Infantry Tactics for Colored Troops".

The photographer, Nelson Augustus Moore was one of Hartford's pioneer photographers. He took some of the earliest known photographs of the city. Perhaps he was not exactly an abolitionist.
