Major General Warren commanded the 5th Corps from March, 1864 until his unceremonious removal from command in April, 1865 - thanks mostly to the animosity and political sway held by General Sheridan.  Though he was sometimes arrogant, cautious, and too independent in thought and action, he was respected as a meticulous, intelligent, and conscientious commander who spent the last years of his life working to clear his name and reputation – dying before he was officially cleared of any wrongdoing.

In this famous photo, Warren stands with his staff of 12 before his 5th Corps Headquarters flag.  He wears the rank of Major General and is standing in front of “Whig Hill”, also known as the Beverly House in Spotsylvania, Virginia.  The image is mounted to a plain card with “Brady” and “Washington” at either low corner.  Other than a slight surface mark at upper left, the image is in excellent condition.  It is mounted in a modern frame with no backing and fronted by a cream-colored mat.  Dimensions of the frame are 10.8” x 13.6”, with the photo card measuring the same; contains plexiglass.  The image itself measures 5.4” x 7.8”.
