A striking original albumen print from Alexander Gardner's landmark Photographic Sketch Book of the War, published 1865–1866. The panoramic image captures Battery A, 4th U.S. Artillery — a regular Army battery assigned to Robertson's Artillery Brigade — assembled in full field formation, with cannon, caissons, horses, and cannoneers stretching across an open field backed by dense Virginia woodline. The wide format makes it one of the most visually impressive unit photographs of the entire war.
Battery A, 4th U.S. Artillery served with distinction throughout the Eastern Theater, seeing action at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. The February 1864 date places this image during the army's winter cantonment period in Virginia.
The negative was made by James Gardner (Alexander's brother) with the positive printed by Alexander Gardner, 511 7th Street, Washington. Plate number, photographer credits, title, and date fully legible beneath the image.
Presented in a handsome carved mahogany-finish wood frame with double mat and UV-protective plexiglass, ensuring long-term preservation.
Plate: No. 69, February 1864
Frame Dimensions: 18.5" x 17"
Condition: Good. Some foxing and toning to mount consistent with age; image clear and well-defined. [ss] [ph:L]
