This flat wooden yarn needle carries an old ink inscription on each side that was intended to freshen an older pencil inscription. One side reads: “For net a bird net or hammock / large mesh.” The other gives a provenance: “Dr. Alexander McDonald Davison / made this for me when a girl or child / at Rockville Mr. Isaac Fontaine Hite his brother in law. / E.A. Smith.”

Given the mention of Rockville this likely has a Maryland connection though we find Dr. Davison (1813-1889) connected with Frederick County, VA, before his move to Missouri in 1836. His first wife was Matilda Madison Hite (1819-1853,) born in Frederick County, VA, whose brother was Isaac Fontaine Hite, (1807-1884.) Some further diligent genealogical work may establish the connection with E.A. Smith.  [sr] [ph:m]
