Attractive set of spoons of with simple design; each is monogrammed, “Snowden” in script lettering. Maker marked on the reverse, “W.M. SAVAGE”.  Measure 5 ½” in length. Overall very nice condition, though do show some minor wear.

W.M. Savage was a silversmith and jeweler in Glasgow, Kentucky who worked from 1840 to 1892. The first mention of Savage is in the Barren County, Kentucky marriage records when he married Susannah Williams on April 15th 1805. It is thought that he moved to Virginia for some time, a William Savage advertises in the Staunton Eagle on April 2nd of 1808, for “one or two journeymen clockmakers or silversmiths who would find constant employment at generous wages by applying to him at Liberty (now Bedford County Virginia.” Bedford county is between Roanoke and Lynchburg Virginia. By 1813 he places an ad in the Kentucky Reporter along with fellow businessmen promoting settlement in Glasgow.  [ld] [ph:L]
