1870s tan cotton velvet bonnet from the Texas Civil War Museum collection. The watered finish on the velvet is unusual on a plush fabric, and more commonly found on silk fabrics. The high crown and deeply-curved brim is typical of the latter years of the decade; the inside of the brim is faced in plain gold velvet. Two lengths of fancy-woven tan and gold ribbon decorate either side of the bonnet. Multiple loops and ends of light tan petersham ribbon with satin edges accent the left side of the bonnet; an ivory ostrich plume accents the right side. The same light tan petersham ribbon lined with plain gold velvet is used for the bonnet ties; one longer tie features a composed bow that sits under the chin; the longer tie attaches to the opposite shorter tie. Thread marks indicate the ties probably fastened with a missing hook-and-eye. The bonnet is lined with ivory silk. A stamp in the back of the lining has a crown with the words “Modes. Barker and Partridge, Fine Millinery, Jamestown, N.Y.”

Condition: Good. The trimming and ties would benefit from light steaming. The lining is beginning to shatter.  [cs][ph:L]
