This is a scale to weigh gold sovereigns and half sovereigns. They were made in the mid-19th century. You placed the gold coin in the appropriate spot and if the scale balanced then the coin was real. If it did not balance then you knew the coin was a fake.
Measures approximately 4” long. Hinged brass scale is stamped with crowns and “SOVEREINE / WARRANTED” in two places. From the collection of author/publisher Dean Thomas. [jet][ph:L]
