This .58 Pattern 1857 Cartridge Box features stitched attachment points – later to be reinforced by rivet with the advent of the Pattern 1861.  This example is missing its sling loops, with the remnants still attached. The outer surfaces show minimal crazing, with some light cracking at upper right (the folded area). The implement pouch is missing its flap, with it having separated at some point from the line of stitching across its top. The inner flap retains both ears and the original cartridge tins are present.  A piece of wire holds the cartridge box plate to the outer flap.  Belt loops and shoulder strap loops are securely attached and all body stitching appears strong. The closure tab is crazed and missing material at the low right corner. Finial is secure with tarnish at the base. No marker markings are noted.

This pattern saw extensive service use during the Civil War as the earliest standard compliment to the rifled musket. This is an honest example with veteran wear – perfect for display.  [cm][ph:L]
