In 1896 the government started issuing a cartridge box to carry revolver ammunition. The earliest were made of black leather, had no insert, were not dated, and only stamped with the arsenal of manufacture and inspector.

In 1902 the army changed all leather equipment to be produced in russet leather. Beginning in 1903 the russet leather box featured a wood insert drilled to hold 12 cartridges for the .38 caliber long Colt, the back of the box was stamped with the arsenal of manufacture, the inspector, and the date of manufacture.

This is a 1903 dated, russet leather pistol cartridge box for .38 caliber ammunition in excellent condition. The front flap features the typical “US” within an oval. Drilled wood block is inside, a brass finial is mounted to the bottom, and there are two belt loops sewn to the back. Between the belt loops it is stamped “ROCK ISLAND / ARSENAL / 1903 / H.E.K.” Leather is remains in very fine condition; all stitching remains strong and unbroken.  [jet][ph:L]
