This is a Civil War percussion cap pouch. The leather remains in fine overall condition, likely unissued.

This pattern has the integral closing tab as an extension of the outer flap. The closing tab remains unbroken. The outer flap exhibits a lightly stamped, oval sub-inspector’s stamp. The interior flap is stamped, in a very small size, “W.H. WILKINSON / SPRINGFIELD, MASS”. Both inner “ears” remain firmly sewn in place. No fleece or nipple pick remain.

Bottom has brass finial. Both narrow belt loops remain in place on back and are stitched and riveted. All stitching is strong and intact.

W.H. Wilkinson had numerous contracts, some on his own and some in partnership as Wilkinson & Cumming. The box has the improvements formally adopted in March 1864 of using a rivet to reinforce the stitching. Wilkinson had various government and state contracts for leather accoutrements.
