This badge came to us in a collection of United Confederate Veterans material and is consists of the title “CHAPLAIN” embroidered silver and gold bullion thread in block letters within a gold bullion embroidered knotted wreath on a dark blue ground, likely intended as a hat badge. This is done on a typical white web backing with the badge trimmed to the outline of the wreath. The silver portions of the letters have dulled slightly to a gray. The difference in color between them and the gilt letters make it likely the color difference was intentional. We do not know of a regulation specifying this as an official UCV badge, but it is typical of commercially marketed hat badges for fraternal and society groups of the period. There are some loose threads on the back indicating it was actually worn.  [ss] [ph:m]
