A very detailed false-embroidered artillery insignia made of die-stamped rolled brass and fitted on the back with two thick brass wires for attachment to a hat. This form of artillery insignia is illustrated as Figure 270 in Campbell and O’Donnell American Military Headgear Insignia, who classify it as militia artillery dating 1855-1865. As a commercially produced piece, rather than army issue, it could also have been worn into early Civil War service by a state artillery company entering the volunteer service or be purchased for wear by an officer at any point in that period. In form it follows the 1851 pattern with long barrels crossing below the mid-point and is quite detailed in the representation of astragals and fillets on the barrels and cursorily rendered dolphin handles in addition to the raised ribs representing coils of bullion embroidery. The condition is excellent, with no bends, cracks or breaks, and a medium bright patina with no verdigris or corrosion, just some oxidation to the solder securing the pins on the reverse.   [sr][ph:L]
