This tinned-iron, flat sided drum canteen is Confederate or militia, or perhaps both. It is simply made with round, flat sides crimped over around the edge and soldered to a single tinned iron band, into which a tinned-iron spout has been soldered. Overall this measures 4-1/2 by 2-1/2 inches, rather small for field use, but quite possible from an early-war maker used to supplying militia more interested in fulfilling the letter of the law, that they had to have a canteen, than its capacity - at least any capacity beyond a sip or two on hot drill day, or a satisfying taste of something more powerful after a muster and parade.

The condition is very good. For the most part the tinned iron has oxidized as usual to a gray, with a few spots of brighter color where the tin was thicker and some brown spots from the iron where it was thin or worn. The solder, as usual, shows as a dull silver. Interestingly, there are no indications this was fitted with brackets for a shoulder sling or loops for a waist belt- as sometimes seen on overtly militia examples. We expect, then, that the maker relied on a cloth cover to retain the strap, passing it through holes in the cover at the shoulders or sewn in place, which would be a cost-cutting and time saving matter, though we can’t discount the possibility that it was thought to be small enough to be carried in a haversack with the soldier’s rations.  [sr][ph:L]
