This smaller canteen matches pre-Civil War varieties in size and construction, holding a modest amount of water for occasional drill and light duties.

All soldering remains strong, while the tin body halves show light surface oxidation.  All banded canteen attachment loops/rings are complete and still hold the original drill fabric sling – which remains complete and virtually undamaged. The spout is likewise complete and firmly affixed to the top of the canteen body. No stopper or associated pieces are present.  The canteen measures 6” horizontally across the body and 6.75” from the tip of the spout to the base of the body.

It's difficult to interpret the Civil War without an understanding of the military culture of the era at large, making this a worthy piece for the well-rounded collection of Civil War and antebellum militaria.  [cm][ph:L]
