This is a match for O’Donnell & Campbell Plate 550 in very good condition, with good edge, nice bright patina, showing some original gilt and some minor age stains, and a full lead solder fill on the back with no losses, showing light and dark gray with the iron wire loops securely in place. New York followed federal patterns in its plates of the 1850s and 1860s, issuing oval cartridge box plates bearing SNY for State of New York in place of the US. This “thin letter” style was issued starting in 1863 along with the arrow-back SNY belt plate on accoutrements, and was intended for the state’s militia, but O’Donnell and Campbell note some have been found on the Wilderness battlefield and other 1864-65 sites.
