Civil War bridle or headstall rosettes. They are stamped brass, circular, domed with two steps and given a raised, entwined “USA” on the top, measuring 1-3/4” in diameter. The reverse is fitted with a brass staple to mount it on the leather straps of the headstall of the horse. These are considered to be for US artillery, not being mentioned in Civil War regulations for U.S. cavalry who, before the war were in theory provided with rosettes bearing regimental numerals and company letters, but which are not specified any in wartime ordnance manuals.

These are good examples with the bars in place on the reverse; one has a darker area of tarnish along it’s right edge. The brass of each has an aged, untouched, unpolished tone; one is overall slightly darker than the other.  The entwined USA likely dates these to 1863 when the entwined USA rosettes on the artillery bit were introduced.
