A substantial cast iron stove front plate with hinged firebox door, marked across the upper panel "G. ARNOLD GETTYSBURG." The casting is richly ornamented in the mid-19th-century taste, centered on a large radiating daisy/rosette medallion flanked by scrolling acanthus and floral foliage, all set against finely crosshatched grounds. A second decorative panel with matching rosette and leaf motifs runs along the lower section, and a turned pivoting latch handle secures the door. The plate retains its original cast hinges and iron hardware.

The piece is attributed to the Gettysburg Steam Foundry, a concern of George Arnold (1799–1879), a Gettysburg merchant who established the foundry in late 1838 and, beginning with newspaper advertisements in 1839, offered "new and superior cook stoves" made at his Gettysburg facility. Arnold's storefront during this period (1839–1852) stood at the corner of Baltimore Street; in 1852 he relocated nearby to the corner of York Street, by which time he was describing his business as a "clothing emporium" and "tailor shop" where only a few stoves were offered from time to time. This places the casting firmly within the foundry's active stove-production years.

Condition is consistent with age and use: an even oxidized rust patina overall, surface roughness and minor losses to high points of the relief, and expected wear to the door mechanism. The piece displays well as a strong example of regional Pennsylvania foundry work with a desirable Gettysburg association. Measuring approximately 22 inches in height and roughly 18 inches in width, weight approx. 25 lbs. Accompanied by a descriptive information card.  [ss][ph:L]
