This is an early, classically York County style powder horn with two incised lines running around the top edge of the lathe-turned, convex base plug mirroring the two parallel incised lines along the lower edge of the body of the horn, with curved steps above creating both channels and ridges, one of which near the top has a rope design, with a concave center containing a staple for the end of a carrying strap. A second staple, for the other end of the strap is mounted just below the turned spout, which has a small plug still in place. The horn is untouched, with a cream colored body showing some darker brown areas and spots, with some rubbing to the finish from actual wear and use, which has also eliminated a stretch of the two lines along the bottom of the horn body next to the plug. The horn is stable, with no cracks or chips to the horn or wood plug. The plug has a nice, even deep brown tone. The tip, turned with channels, raised ridges and incised lines like the plug, shows lighter in color, matching the upper part of the horn, from handling. There is a little dust and dirt in the recesses of the turnings of the base plug, which we rather like.  [sr][ph:m/L]
