This has a wonderful profusion of design elements that seems to combine rococo foliate C-scrolls symmetrically arranged with some geometric ornaments- something in the “too much is not enough” school of decoration, along with a “let’s include this, too” spirit and a teacher making sure that if there was a motif on the left, there better be a matching one on the right. The maker’s stamp appears on the top: “G & J. W. HAWKSLEY / SHEFFIELD.” The firm was founded by brothers George and John William Hawksley, and in business from 1845 to 1889. IT does not get much more Victorian. The spout is adjustable and marked in drams. The body has a very coppery tone. The top and spout are more a medium brass. There are no carrying rings. There is some greenish white residue in recesses and small dark spotting, but the seams are good and the insistently elaborate decoration rather interesting, with the contours of the flask matching the raised scroll motifs, or vice versa.
