Here is an example of an early state marked US 1798 Contract Socket Bayonet. As is typical of most of these bayonets, delivered in conjunction with the US 1798 contract muskets. As is typical of 1798 socket bayonets from the middle of the first decade of the 19th century through the end of their production, the socket includes a rudimentary bridge. The bayonet, as with mode 1798 contract bayonets, is cut for a top stud.

The bayonet measures approximately 18” long overall with a 14” blade and a 3.4” socket. A thin top flute is 6.25” long. Dark patina overall with scattered fine pitting. Stamped on flat of the blade is “NC” and a “B”. There is also a “G” stamped at the end of the mortise on the socket.

This would be a solid addition to any display of US 1798 Contract Muskets or War of 1812 era weapons. [jet][ph:L]
