One of the full generals of the Confederacy, he saw the most continuous service of any officer in the war. Severely wounded at First Bull Run, he later fought under Bragg at Perryville before commanding the Trans-Mississippi Department, where his forces crushed Banks in the Red River Campaign. Among the last to surrender, he capitulated in June 1865. After the war he accepted the Chair of Mathematics at the University of the South at Sewanee, which he held until his death — the last surviving full general of the Confederacy.

Partly-printed Document Signed ("E. Kirby Smith"), a bank check drawn on the Bank of Winchester, Winchester, Tennessee, dated September 21, 1892 (No. 364), approx. 7¼ x 3 in. Completed throughout in his hand and made payable to "Mrs. E. Kirby Smith" in the sum of $8.00 — so that the family name appears twice in his writing, once in the body and again at the signature. Endorsed on the verso by Mrs. E. Kirby Smith and G.W. Gibson. Boldly penned. Cut cancellation not affecting text or signature; mounting residue and light toning to verso; light wrinkling and folds; otherwise Very Good.

Accompanied by a small folded United Daughters of the Confederacy imprint — the Kirby-Smith Chapter, Sewanee, Tennessee — bearing his engraved portrait on the cover and soliciting funds toward a memorial to the General at Sewanee, where he had taught and died. Memorial Committee of Mrs. Telfair Hodgson (Chairman), Mrs. L. D. Kirby, and Mrs. Douglas Vaughan; the interior dated September 1934, with a period notation recording $560.09 raised toward the memorial, and a Confederate battle-flag vignette to the rear. A handsome association grouping linking the General's own hand to the effort to commemorate him.   [ss][ph:L]
