Bold ink signature, "Wm Barksdale," with "Columbus / Mississippi" in his hand beneath, on a clipped cream paper panel measuring approximately 5 x 2 inches. The format — name over hometown — is consistent with a franked address panel from Barksdale's years as a U.S. Representative (1853–January 1861), when he held congressional franking privileges. Ink remains strong and legible with a clean, confident flourish. Housed in a protective sleeve.

A Mississippi lawyer and editor of the Columbus Democrat, Barksdale served four terms in Congress before resigning with secession. As a brigadier general he led the famed Mississippi Brigade, and on July 2, 1863, he fell mortally wounded spearheading the Confederate assault on the Peach Orchard at Gettysburg — one of the war's most storied brigade charges. Signatures of Barksdale are scarce owing to his early wartime death, and examples tied to his Columbus home are especially desirable to Confederate and Gettysburg collectors.   [ss] [ph:L]
