Pewter disk in excavated relic condition. 32mm. Bust of Geary with “FOR GOV. MAJ. GEN. J.W. GEARY / 1866” on one side and a large star with “I VOTE AS I FIGHT” on back side. Struck by William H. Key of Philadelphia.
Many of Geary’s campaign artifacts tend to emphasize his military service and loyalty to the Republican Party and Abraham Lincoln’s platforms during the Civil War, which opponent Clymer did not support. A quote from General Ulysses S. Grant printed on Geary’s ribbon gives advice: “Vote for only such men as were true to the Country in 1861.” These show the complicated political atmosphere in the first gubernatorial election following the Civil War.
Complete and solid, but exhibiting relic corrosion. [jet] [ph:L]
